The borrowed boys look isn’t new yet many women out there are still trying to figure out how to make a structured, masculine suit work for them. A well-tailored and well made suit will be around for a long time, as long as it’s made well of course. How you wear the suit and what you wear it with are key factors in making it work for you as well as keeping it on trend and current.
Here’s how to wear a masculine suit:
- The Suit Itself – Make sure you buy the complete suit. Don’t just stop at the pant, the shirt or the jacket. Be sure to get them hemmed to suit your height and heel height. Take your shoes with you when you get the pants and/or skirt professionally hemmed. The jacket must fit perfectly across the shoulders with the shoulder seam right along the tip of your shoulder. A drop shoulder seam or a shoulder seam that meets closer to your collar-bone are both examples of an ill fitted suit jacket. Also be sure the length in the jacket arm suits your arm length as well. If the jacket cuff meets your knuckles or is just shy of your wrist, then you may need a different size jacket all together. Be sure to check with your seamstress before you return the jacket to see if he or she can let out fabric to make it longer or trim fabric to make the arm length shorter.
- Color & Fabric – Suits made of velvet, tweed, cotton blends and/or silk are all good choices, just be sure the color looks good on you and your features. Also be sure to stay away from loud vibrant colors. A vibrant color suit may become dated quicker than you think. Bolder, darker colors will stand the test of time and one can always wear a blouse of a brighter hue if one feels like making a statement with color.
- Shirts – White is always a classic choice and will never go out of style. A white blouse will also be accepted in any situation or event. Colored blouses, lace tanks or even a form fitted tube top under the jacket, can give your look a feminine appeal. Just be sure it flows nicely and your blouse choice suits your well-tailored suit and your overall look.
