‘Tis the Season to Decorate!
I always love this time of year! Decorating for the Holidays is fun and it’s always a big event here at my house. I typically turn on Christmas music, warm up some mulled wine, turn on the fireplace and spend the evening with family decorating the tree and adding special touches to each room. I chose silver and gold this year and used a local decorator’s advice by using what I have around the house to make centerpieces, garland and the countertops extra festive and inviting for the holiday season.
Coffee table centerpieces don’t need to take a lot of time nor do you need to buy everything new. Everything on my coffee table photographed here was collected from other parts of the house and added together for a “wow” effect. I purchased a wall mirror from Marshall’s Home Goods, placed it in the middle of the table and placed candles, vases and decor on top. I love how the reflection includes the metallics and the Christmas lights from the tree. The key is to use different sizes of vases and candles and different heights for dimension.
I used the same ideas and mindset from decorating my centerpieces when I decorated my mantle. The reindeer statues were placed next to mirrored candle holders and I placed a basic piece of glittered garland along the middle of the mantle. I added a white and silver 12 inch ribbon from the tree, bulbs and flower pins to the garland for a little Holiday flair. I then added 5 branches of fresh incense cedar to the garland for more dimension and for a richer look. I’ll be buying more beautiful incense cedar to place in the banister garland because I absolutely love how this turned out!
Every tree needs a festive garland that snakes its way from the bottom of the tree to the top and blends well with your ornament selection and tree topper. I personally love to mix large bulbs with small bulbs and a subtle 12-inch ribbon that’s wraps around the tree. Each year I add white feathers to the ends of the branches for a glamorous effect of snow. Where did I find them? I purchased white boas from Michael’s and cut 4-5 inch pieces. Many people toss popcorn on their tree, I toss feathers and they always seem to land in just the right place.
Set an elegant tone by wrapping a pre-lit garland around your banister. I use gold ribbon also from Michael’s to tie the garland around the banister to prevent scratching and drooping. Looking for something fancier? Dress up your basic garland with bulbs, ribbon and or a beautiful arrangement of fresh hydrangeas, evergreen leaves or seeded eucalyptus in select areas. This will also provide a more impressive presentation.
For the dining table, I purchased another piece of garland with pinecones attached to be placed in the center. I swapped out my Summer flowers for fake poinsettias (all available at Michael’s) and added several types and sizes of candles. I even added white candles to our favorite wine bottles for color, height and style.
When decorating your home, I recommend getting out all of your home decor and find a place for each piece to fill each room with Holiday love. Here in the bathroom, I added two large pine cones that I purchased from a local Holiday Market and added silver bulbs to the tray. On other days, this beautiful silver leaf tray is used for bread on the table. For the next few weeks, it’s going to sit pretty right here on the bathroom counter next to my charming reindeer. This looks especially gorgeous when the candles are lit at night.
What types of things do you do a little extra special when decorating for the holidays? I’d love to hear your decorating ideas!
