Help Slow the Spread of COVID-19 by Wearing a Cotton Face Mask

The world is a scary place, and COVID-19 is to blame. COVID-19 is the disease caused by the new coronavirus that emerged in China in December 2019. Yes, December and here it is April 15th, and our country is now peaking with high numbers of individuals infected, and many are even dying, unfortunately. On this day, it has been reported the United States has lost 26,064 Americans to this awful virus, and the numbers are climbing each day.

COVID-19 symptoms include cough, fever, shortness of breath, muscle aches, and a sore throat. Some patients have even complained about an unexplained loss of taste or smell, diarrhea, and headaches. It’s hitting our older communities very hard—specifically, those who are heavy smokers and those over 60 years of age. COVID-19 has also been attacking individuals of all ages with weak immune systems, asthma, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hepatitis B, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney diseases, and cancer, as noted on statnews.com

It’s known that coronavirus can be spread from person to person. Prevention involves frequent hand-washing, coughing into the bend of your elbow, staying home when you are sick, and wearing a cloth face covering if you can’t practice social distancing. If someone told me a year ago that we would all be grounded to our homes by our Government and wearing a cotton face mask before heading to the grocery store was going to be a thing, I would not have believed them. But here we are, and here I am. We are living in a world of uncertainty, and we are all a little wrecked as we try to find our way through this “new normal.”

There is no coronavirus vaccine yet, and the CDC says wearing something over our face is better than nothing at this point. The medical teams across the country are struggling to obtain and hold onto enough N95 masks just to get through their long shifts. Supply is drastically low, and our medical teams are struggling.

To help our heroes who are on the front lines working around the clock to keep our communities alive, we must do our part to help flatten the curve. And, to protect ourselves. There was a time when we would go to the doctor or the ER if we got sick. But not now. Now, many who come down with beginning symptoms of COVID-19 are told to stay home and “cope” until it gets unbearable because the hospitals are overwhelmed, and there aren’t enough ventilators to go around. Unfortunately, when the symptoms get unbearable, for many, it’s too late.

Here’s what we can do to help slow this down, flatten the curve, and to protect ourselves:

  • Social Distance,
  • Stay Home
  • Wash hands frequently
  • Cover coughs and sneezes
  • Wear a face mask if you go out

There have been a large number of individuals who have carried COVID-19 who don’t feel the symptoms and don’t feel sick at all but have given it to others. It spreads. Fast. CDC advises, “the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others”.

Facts You Need to Know About Cloth Face Masks:

  • They are better than nothing.
  • They should not be placed on children under the age of 2.
  • They should not be worn by anyone who has trouble breathing, is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance. (via the CDC).
  • They should be breathable.
  • Are worn to protect others from you as you may be a carrier and not know it.

How to Wear a Cloth Face Mask:

  • Masks should fit snugly but comfortably.
  • Masks need to be secured with ties or ear loops.
  • Masks should include more than one layer of fabric.
  • Masks should allow for breathing without restriction.
  • Masks must be washable without being damaged or changing of shape.

Stay healthy everyone. Be safe and take the right measures to protect yourself and others around you. Hopefully, this will be over soon. God Bless.
